For organisers: how to fill a youth tournament with teams of the right level
A tournament's reputation rests on the level of its field. How to set the level per age group, judge teams you do not know, and keep the bracket full.
Academies choose tournaments by the teams they will meet. A field that is too uneven produces lopsided matches, unhappy coaches and fewer applications the following year. These are the steps that keep a bracket strong.
Define the level for each age group
Write down, for each age group, the level you want: the leagues the teams should play in, the kind of academies you want to see and the format. A clear target makes every invitation decision easier, and lets you explain to an academy why it is, or is not, the right fit.
Look beyond your usual contacts
Returning teams are reliable, but they make a field predictable, and gaps appear when a regular drops out late. Academies from other countries bring variety and new rivalries; the challenge is judging their level before you invite them.
How can you judge a team you do not know?
- The leagues its squads play in, and their recent positions.
- Results against opponents you know.
- The coaching staff and their qualifications.
- Experience of travelling to tournaments abroad.
- References from other organisers.
Secure the field early
Set clear deadlines, ask for a deposit to confirm each place, and keep a short reserve list per age group. A team that has paid a deposit rarely withdraws late; one that has not often does.
Make the tournament worth returning to
Guaranteed matches, placement games, clear communication before and during the event, and well-run accommodation and transfers. Academies talk to each other, and this year's experience decides who applies next year.
